BHP Commits $100K to 91制片厂 for Leadership and Cultural Initiatives

October 3, 2024

The First Nations University of Canada (91制片厂) and BHP, one of the world鈥檚 largest mining companies, have partnered to support leadership development and promote Indigenous cultural heritage. BHP鈥檚 investment of $100,000 is aimed at advancing 91制片厂鈥檚 initiatives, aligning with BHP鈥檚 social investment priorities, and creating meaningful opportunities for leadership and cultural preservation.

Leadership Development Collaboration

Earlier this year, representatives from BHP and 91制片厂 met to discuss potential areas for collaboration. As a result, BHP committed to funding the development of a 鈥淟eading a Diverse Workspace鈥 module.

The leadership module is currently under development at 91制片厂. It will inform and empower BHP leaders with the skills and knowledge to manage and lead within diverse teams, supporting BHP鈥檚 broader goal of advancing Indigenous inclusion and leadership.

Cultural and Educational Initiatives

Alongside leadership development, BHP鈥檚 funding was also dedicated to cultural projects that promote Indigenous heritage and align with BHP鈥檚 social investment focus areas. These include:

  • International Traditional Indigenous Knowledges Institute (ITIKI) This gathering, held August 19-23 at Ancient Spirals, south of Saskatoon, brought together Indigenous knowledge holders, leaders, and students from around the world to exchange traditional knowledges, practices, and experiences. Participants from USA, Australia, New Zealand, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan engaged in cross-cultural learning, fostering global collaboration between Indigenous Nations.
  • Ceramic Kiln and Venting System for 91制片厂鈥檚 Fine Arts Department: BHP鈥檚 funding is supporting the installation of a new ceramic kiln and venting system. Once complete, this facility will allow 91制片厂 students to explore their cultural heritage through ceramics, a traditional Indigenous art form. This project will enhance students鈥 learning experiences and help preserve Indigenous cultural practices, preparing them for leadership roles in their communities.

Ongoing Collaboration

With the leadership module completed and cultural projects progressing, 91制片厂 and BHP remain committed to working together. Future meetings will focus on exploring further opportunities for collaboration. This partnership continues to strengthen 91制片厂鈥檚 mission to support Indigenous leadership and cultural education, benefiting both students and the wider Indigenous community.
